Permanent DST

Permanent Daylight Saving Time.

Standard Time is for corporations; DST is for people.

One clock, all year, with the extra hour of light where people can use it: after work and school. Patios, picnics, sports and sunsets after work. More sun, less grind.

Standard Time7:10 am – 4:14 pm
Permanent DST8:10 am – 5:14 pm

On Standard Time the sun sets at 4:14 pm, well before most people leave work. Permanent DST keeps the same nine hours of light and moves one of them to the evening, when people are awake to use it.

Longest day · Jun 21

Standard Time4:07 am – 7:25 pm
Permanent DST5:07 am – 8:25 pm

After 5 pm, permanent DST gives you about 3½ hours of daylight (3 h 25 min). Permanent Standard Time gives you about 2½ (2 h 25 min) and spends the extra hour at 4:07 am, while nearly everyone is asleep.

What people want

56% of Americans would pick permanent DST over permanent Standard Time.

Year-round light in the eveningYear-round light in the morning

And only 12% of adults support switching the clocks twice a year. Most people want the switch gone, and more of them want to keep the evening light.

The case

What an extra hour of evening light does

Every point below comes from published research. Follow the links and check our work.

727pedestrian crashes

Safer walks home

More people are on the road in the evening than at dawn. Researchers estimated that year-round DST from 1987 to 1991 would have meant 901 fewer fatal crashes in the US, 727 of them involving pedestrians.

Ferguson et al., American Journal of Public Health, 1995

36,550deer a year

Fewer deer on the hood

Deer collisions peak when commutes overlap with dusk. A study of over a million crashes found permanent DST would prevent about 36,550 deer deaths, 33 human deaths, 2,054 injuries and $1.19 billion in costs every year.

Cunningham & Prugh, Current Biology, 2022

27%fewer robberies

Less crime in the evening

When DST started each spring, robberies fell 27% in the evening hour that gained light, and 7% across the whole day.

Doleac & Sanders, Review of Economics and Statistics, 2015

3.5%spending drop

Busier main streets

In the 30 days after DST ended, card spending per person in Los Angeles fell 3.5% compared with Phoenix, which never changes its clocks. Light after work brings people out to shop and eat.

JPMorgan Chase Institute, 2016

6%more fatal crashes

No more spring forward

Fatal car crashes jump 6% in the week after clocks spring forward, about 28 extra deaths a year in the US. Lock the clock on DST and that switch never happens again.

Fritz et al., Current Biology, 2020

But what about dark mornings?

Move the bell, not the clock

Time is a social agreement. The clock is just a label. If winter mornings feel too dark, we can change when school and work start. We don't have to take light away from everyone's evening.

Schools already stagger start times

Districts start different ages at different times so buses can run several routes each morning. Start times are already a scheduling choice, not a law of nature.

States already set start times by law

California requires high schools to start no earlier than 8:30 am and middle schools no earlier than 8:00 am, since the 2022–23 school year. Rural districts are exempt. (CBS News)

Local places can pick local hours

Sunrise on the same clock can differ by more than an hour between the east and west edges of a time zone. A school can set winter hours that fit its own sunrise instead of the whole country losing its evenings.

Where it stands

Closer than it has ever been

Nineteen US states have already passed laws for permanent DST. They can't take effect until Congress allows it. Hawaii and most of Arizona stay on standard time either way.

Ontario, Canada votes for permanent DST

The province of Ontario passed its Time Amendment Act unanimously. It only takes effect once Quebec and New York State make the same move. (Global News)

It passed unanimously, then stalled in the House.

NOW

Waiting on the Senate

The bill needs 60 Senate votes. As of the latest reports no vote had been scheduled. Unless the Senate passes it and the President signs it before November 1, 2026, clocks fall back again. (FOX 5, FOX 2)

About us

Nobody pays us. You can't either.

Unlike some groups pushing for Standard Time, we're not a nonprofit, we're not a 501(c)(4), and we don't take donations. There's no fundraising list and no membership fee.

We just think the extra hour of light belongs in the evening, when people can enjoy it with family and friends instead of spending it at a desk.
